The centrally located One King West at the prestigious intersection of King and Yonge stands as a designated Ontario Heritage Building. At the time of its construction in 1914 it was one of the tallest buildings in Toronto at 12 storeys tall. And then in 2006 it reopened as a hotel and condominium residence with 51 storeys and over 300 suites. Last week One King West unveiled their new executive hospitality suite, the Fifteen Hundred on the 15th floor. As soon as you walk in to this modern space you immediately notice the vast, open layout with the south-facing floor-to-ceiling glass wall that can be fully retracted. The wrap-around terrace is very large and inviting with sweeping views of downtown. I could spend many relaxing hours with friends out here. This is a unique, versatile space equipped for entertaining with a wireless touchpad controlling the lighting, drapery, wall-mounted TVs and audio. One floor directly below there is also a new Fourteen Hundred suite that is well-equipped to be used as an off-site executive boardroom or for corporate training or as a dynamic party space. And here’s the interesting thing: there’s a hidden staircase that directly connects these two suites, making this pair a unique and versatile two-storey space for entertaining, executive retreats, product launches and wedding receptions. Splinter Cell: Blacklist is the sixth installment of the popular game series, but this is the first that is wholly produced by the young Ubisoft Toronto studio. With three years of hard work behind them and already very solid reviews of the game, the Toronto team had a lot to celebrate. And celebrate they did, and we were fortunate enough to be part of it. We were greeted at the door by the hostess and immediately handed very cool USB key dog tags to commemorate the launch. What’s the USB key for you ask? Well it’s to store your pictures with the one and only Sam Fisher, the main character in the game! There was an area set up where you can pose with a real, live actor playing Sam Fisher, using props such as night vision goggles, an assault rifle, and a knife. You were encouraged to be as creative or action-oriented as you can be. A photographer then took your photo, which were then transferred to your USB key dog tags. What an awesomely unique and personalized souvenir! The venue itself, Metropolis Factory, was a dimly-lit, multi-level warehouse that only served to immerse you in an almost game-like environment. From the second floor the game’s producer, Jade Raymond, made a rousing speech to the cheers and applause from the team below. It was clear that the Toronto team was proud of its accomplishments, which was made even more evident after talking to some of the editors, animators, engineers, and others who contributed to the game. Food was aplenty and drinks were flowing all night long. Several Xbox 360 stations and gamer couches were available for everyone to try out the game ahead of its launch. With control innovations using Xbox 360’s Kinect motion sensor and Wii U’s controller touchscreen, the reintroduction of the popular “Spies vs Mercs” multiplayer mode, and most importantly the return to the series’ stealth roots, gamers have a lot to look forward to. Running on it’s 19th year, it was another well-attended 3 days of the annual Toronto Festival of Beer, one of the largest celebrations of beer in Canada with over 200 beer brands to sample at Exhibition Place. Even with the popularity of the festival, the beer prices are a pretty good value (when you don’t count the admission fee). You can fill your glass beer mug for $2 at almost all the beer booths. I was satisfied for a whole day of light sampling with just a pack of 20 tokens for $20. Compare that to other alcohol-centric festivals that charge admission and $8-10 per drink. It was a great deal when I was there in 2011 and a nice patron sold me his bag of tokens for a discount because he was leaving. Highlights included cooking demos with Rock Lobster and Fidel Gastros among others. There was also live music on the main stage with De La Soul on Friday, The Spin Doctors on Saturday and Big Sugar on Sunday. Big Sugar is amazing live by the way, in case you didn’t already know. Great band for hot summer weather like at a beer festival. I got to see them in concert at Sound Academy last year. The Mill Street tent always has great busker entertainment, too. What I also like about beer fest is being able to try my usual favourites (Erdinger, Pilsner Urquell and Mill Street’s Tankhouse) while also tasting roads less traveled. Also it was nice running into Kevin Brauch aka the one and only The Thirsty Traveller from The Food Network who was generous enough to offer me his last 2 beer tokens in his pocket. If you’ve ever been to a Toronto FC match you know how much spirit Toronto has at Toronto FC games. Fans really get into it and the energy is pretty intense. And it’s a special game tonight at BMO Field! Toronto FC hosts the world famous Italian football club AS Roma in a friendly match on Wednesday August 7th at 8pm. Ahead of tonight’s game, I got a chance to be at the reception to rub elbows with both teams at the new Cibo wine bar on King West (at the corner of King St W and Brant St. next to Brant House). It was a jam packed frenzy as guests got photo ops and jerseys signed. Even outside as AS Roma was getting off their coach bus, fans outside were anxious to get a photo of AS Roma as they headed into Cibo Wine Bar. With 30 EDM acts performing and 70,000 people at Downsview Park over the 2 days this past Civic holiday weekend, headliners included Above & Beyond, Kaskade, Dada Life, and Steve Angello. Deadmau5 ended the festivities with his grand finale performance.
Dubbed “An Evening to Discover”, the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival Gala was a colourful night to remember. The warm, sunny weather was perfect for the evening starting off by being greeted at the Liberty Grand entrance by the elaborately decorated Junior Carnival King and Queen leading into the VIP reception at the outdoor courtyard for cocktails, silent auction and photo opportunities with the intricate, colorful costumed masqueraders. Dinner inside included speeches and special performances including Calypso/Soca music to dance the rest of the night away for the after party. Guests in attendance included NDP members, Olivia Chow and Andrea Horwath. Proceeds from the fundraising efforts go to the Caribbean Children Foundation (TCCF) www.tccfangels.com You can still get in on the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival action with the Panorama steelpan festival today (Friday, August 2nd) at Allan Lamport Stadium. After presentations and semi-final runway shows across the country searching for the next generation of talent, the short list of Mercedes-Benz Start Up fashion designers have been announced. The program is Canada’s platform for emerging fashion designers with a total of 8 finalists in the group runway show with Spring/Summer 2014 collections to be featured at World MasterCard Fashion Week on Tuesday, October 22 at 7pm. The 2013 CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association Awards) are being held in Edmonton, Alberta on Sunday, September 8th, marking Canada’s biggest night in country music. It will be aired live on CBC with encore airings on CMT Canada starting at 10pm ET. On the morning of July 17th, an official CCMA nominees announcement was held here in Toronto at the Storys Building with industry and media present as well as Autumn Hill and Emerson Drive in attendance giving a sample of their performances. Even though both bands showcased just vocal and acoustic guitar duets, their talents shined through. Emerson Drive will also be giving a live performance at the awards broadcast as well as Dallas Smith and The Band Perry. Dean Brody, Gord Bamford and Terri Clark are among the biggest nomination leaders. Gord Bamford leads with 7 nominations including CCMA Fans’ Choice, Album of the Year, CMT Video of the Year, Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Record Producer(s) of the Year, Male Artist of the Year. The Stop’s Night Market is a fundraising event, held at the Honest Ed’s alleyway, bringing together various chefs, food vendors and artists in support of The Stop’s innovative anti-hunger programs. This year, the event was on June 18 and 19, spanning 2 days instead of 1 in response to the overwhelming demand. What an amazing deal at only $50 for unlimited eats and drinks for such a great cause! This year they raised $115,000!
The annual Boys Night Out event is like being in the manliest of man-caves. They have pretty much everything the youngest and oldest men could want including poker tournaments, golf, motorcycles, sports cars, cigars, fine spirits, tons of great food from local restauranteurs and tons of varieties of fine wine to discover from the Lifford Wine & Spirits portfolio. One unique experience was by the GotStyle section, where owner Melissa Austria would size you up and give you a pocket square with a colour that coordinated with your outfit. With my purple, navy and white checkered shirt Melissa chose an electric blue pocket square. A bold colour for a bold occasion. What a great event idea! There was also a poker tournament, silent auction items, and raffle tickets for big items including the grand prize of a weekend with an Audi S5 Cabriolet with golf and stay at Deerhurst Resort in Muskoka. Basically it was just a great fête letting boys be boys (and women are welcome to) with proceeds going to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada. You should definitely check out this fun, annual charity event for a great cause. It was sold out with an estimated 55,000 people over the 2 days there for Canada Day long weekend. Even scalpers were having trouble getting a hold of tickets on the first day. Last night it was all about the 4 amazing young ladies known as the déVah Quartet and rightfully so. Recently coming off the success of a Kickstarter campaign they hosted their EP release party at Tattoo Rock Parlour with an incredible high-energy performance. Their talent with the electric strings is interesting and intense. Classically trained, contemporarily relevant. I’ve seen how far they’ve come in a few months since my first encounter with them at the ISES Toronto Steampunk Gala and the CSE Star Awards gala. Even before Kickstarter and this EP release they’ve racked up accolades galore including the title of Yamaha Artists in 2011 and working with big names such as Kanye West, K-OS, Feist, Barbara Streisand, Peter Gabriel, Diana Krall, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and many more.
