Belgium Sour Beer (Rodenbach Grand Cru) with Tiramisu

Opened just a few months ago, Toronto’s Annex’ new addition, Prenup Pub (191 College St.), has already garnered the avid attention that most long-standing establishments yearn. A European-style pub, Prenup is more than just a student-hangout.

Located directly across the Wallberg Building of U of T on College Street, Prenup offers a mash-up of refined European style bar and bistro with the casual ambience of a North American pub. Brought to you by the same mastermind behind the Town Crier Pub (115 John St.), Village Idiot Pub (126 McCaul St.) , and Sin & Redemption (136 McCaul St.), the European theme of great beers and fine food is once again alive and well in this new gem.

With a selection of over 70 beers on tap, Prenup doesn’t let her patrons go thirsty. I was thrilled to find a wide range of Belgium and German wheat beers, along with robust ales and doubles – all with reasonable price tags.

The food at Prenup is another spectacle. We had the pleasure of tasting their menu, which began with an unexpected twist on your everyday salad. The Wurst Salad – a mix of kielbasa sausages and dill pickles – was probably my favourite of the night. A simple marriage of salad greens and European sausages, this dish certainly leaves the salad-haters wanting more. Another notable plate is the Madame Monsieur Waffle – a twist on the croque-madame and monsieur with your traditional ham, cheese, and egg components, but served on waffles – this sweet and savory dish is a sure hit for the brunch crowd.

The food continued to impress with an elegant assortment of entrees. If you like traditional hearty German dishes, I recommend the Pork Schnitzel with mushroom sauce. Rich, decadent, and filling, this is the perfect winter fix for a ravenous diner. If you like more sophisticated fares, try the Beer Braised Lamb. A twist on beef wellington, this plate is made with buttery soft lamb pieces wrapped in crispy phyllo pastry. For the non-meat eaters, Prenup doesn’t disappoint with their vegetarian selection – their Prenup Pizza is another crispy winner. The unexpected combo of the night went to the house tiramisu, taken to another level paired with a Belgium sour beer (Rodenbach Grand Cru).

With a swanky interior, and no TVs and loud music as distractions, Prenup’s two-storey atmosphere is both classy and laid-back. The perfect joint to hang out with your friends and coworkers while enjoying a glass of unique cold brew, Prenup Pub promises to warm her clientele with delight.
