On Thursday October 30th, 2013, the TIFF Bell Lightbox had a launch party that spanned 3 floors of the spacious, modern venue to mark the opening of the largest exhibition celebrating all the works of David Cronenberg, one of Canada’s most prolific and iconic filmmakers of our time. Cronenberg is one of the film industry’s originators of what is commonly known as the body horror or venereal horror genre (take the classic movie The Fly, for example).
David Cronenberg was in attendance as well as actor, Jeremy Irons. Interesting attractions at the opening night party included:
- A 3D printer booth by BMC Labs to get your own personal on demand implant.
- A psychoanalyst’s office, The Freudian Slip.
- Casino tables
- Musical entertainment included The Number Line, Paradise Animals, Nyssa and a DJ set by Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene.
“As a premier Canadian wealth management firm, we believe it is important to showcase Canada’s premier artistic talent”, says Andrew Marsh, CEO of Richardson GMP, Lead Event Partner of the Cronenberg party. “David Cronenberg is a true Canadian auteur and visionary that never sacrificed the quality of his art in favour of commercialism. His films are provocative and challenging – never conventional. As a wealth management firm that thinks and works outside of the box to produce the best results for our clients, sponsoring this exhibit was a natural fit for our firm.”
As always, TIFF’s annual signature exhibitions are never ones to miss, such as last year’s Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style which celebrated all things James Bond. Proceeds from the evening supported TIFF’s year-round film programming, education initiatives and community outreach.
The David Cronenberg exhibit will remain at the TIFF Bell Lightbox for public viewings from November 1st to January 19, 2014. The exhibit is FREE for TIFF members, otherwise adult admission is $15 and there will be specials on Tuesdays for $5. Full price listings are here.
