On Saturday March 4th, the Chinese Cabinet at the SickKids Foundation marked its 4th annual Glitter event in support of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. This year’s theme was ‘Glitter in Shanghai’ that brought back to life the allure and eccentricities of Shanghai of the 1920’s. Guests wore glamorous Chinese qipaos which evolved from traditional garb to modern classical lines. The venue, Arcadian Court was decorated in similar style that hinted at the romanticized period.

Among the special guests were Markham Mayor, Frank Scarpitti who serenaded the audience with his rendition of classic Chinese songs sang in Mandarin. What a excellent effort! Emily Hui, a previous SickKid’s patient was also on stage to perform for the audience with a brilliant vocal performance. Emily had undergone surgery at SickKids hospital for a cleft lip and palate at the age of five and with continued support from the hospital with a language pathologist, she was able to aspire to become an accomplished performer and vocalist.

The event raised more than $325,000 benefiting the Hospital for Sick Children with donations, a silent auction, lucky draws, and casino games in the name of charity. The Lucky Draw grand prize winner won round-trip Business Class tickets for two from Toronto to Shanghai donated by Cathay Pacific Airways. Funds raised that night support the redevelopment of an operating suite for transplant, trauma and general surgery at the hospital that will ultimately and crucially improve outcomes for children in medical need. In the past 3 years, events such as Glitter have resulted in $3.8 million in donations through the Chinese Cabinet initiative.

Guests were treated to sumptuous food and drinks provided by Oliver & Bonacini, Grand Catering, Shanghai Dim Sum and Chatime. Other sponsors of the event included Fallsview Casino Resort, the Justin Poy Agency, Manulife, TD Bank, BMO Wealth Management, Cathay Pacific, Synnex Canada, V Line Cosmetic Clinic, and Palettera.
