On the evening of Wednesday, November 27th, the ROM was taken over once again by one of Toronto’s most unique and upscale gala experiences called Bloor Street Entertains. Sponsored by Sun Life Financial, BSE is an annual event with proceeds of the evening going to support life-saving research via CANFAR. It starts with a cocktail reception called TWILIGHT at the Royal Ontario Museum with hors d’oeuvres, top-notch silent auction items and tons of great entertainment. Then after TWILIGHT, it’s time for THE DINNERS where guests disperse to 20 venues in Yorkville for their seated dinner. These extravagant and unique dinner venues include luxury shops such as Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Mulberry, Nespresso, Strellson, Burberry, and a private residence among others. I was lucky to be able to visit 11 of the 20 venues with some help (thanks, Amanda!). Highlights included Tiffany & Co, Burberry and the private residence. Following dinner, guests returned back to the ROM for desserts and to dance the night away. Bloor Street Entertains is a night to remember in pursuit of an AIDS free future. Last night at the Trump Hotel the limited edition Dom Perignon 2004 vintage was revealed in collaboration with balloon art on display by New York’s Jeff Koons. This is the second milestone of its collaboration with Jeff Koons. In terms of tasting notes, the 2004 gives aromas of almond and powdered cocoa that gradually develop into white fruit with hints of dried flowers. It finishes with toasted notes. So for those that want to make a statement this holiday season, this highly-sought after piece will surely be a unique and impressive gift. you can be assured these limited quantities won’t stay on shelves long. To quote UK’s Henry Matson of Farr Vintners, the fact that the 2004 is so different to the 2003 is a key selling point. “We can say to our customers they should buy the 03 to drink, but the 04 will last. Vintage variation like this will totally sell a vintage.” The 2004 Vintage will be available at the LCBO beginning Dec. 7, 2013. The retail price is $247.95. Some photos from last night’s launch at Suits Lobby at the Trump Hotel Here is the LCBO link. The next generation of Canada’s talented opera singers were celebrated at the Canadian Opera Company’s inaugural “Centre Stage” gala on November 26, 2013. After 155 preliminary auditions across Canada, nine short-listed singers competed to win cash prizes and opera glory at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Accompanied by the COC orchestra and conducted by Music Director Johannes Debus, each singer gave their best performance in two arias each. Grammy-nominated and multi-Juno award winning Rufus Wainwright was a charismatic emcee. “I applaud all the young artists we heard in the competition.”, said COC General Director Alexander Neef. “They performed with great passion and commitment, and the quality of the emerging talent we heard made us all very enthusiastic about the future of opera in Canada.” At the end of it, the audience got to vote from their seats for the audience’s choice winner while a panel of judges deliberated on the Top Prize winner. While the judges were making their decision, Rufus Wainwright surprised everyone with delightfully entertaining musical performances of his own accompanied by the COC orchestra. In the end it was soprano singer, Karine Boucher, from Quebec City who won both the Audience Choice Award and the Top Prize Award. Congrats, Karine! Proceeds from the evening were raised in support of the COC and will go towards the company’s Ensemble Studio. The COC artistic staff will confirm the lineup of the 2014/15 Ensemble Studio over the next few weeks. Here are some photos I took during the cocktail reception of the Centre Stage gala. Check out the video of the Centre Stage gala including Karine Boucher’s winning performance: Photos from the competition by Michael Cooper RUFUS WAINWRIGHT AND THE CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY And in related news, the Canadian Opera Company is commissioning a new opera to be composed by Rufus Wainwright and playwright Daniel MacIvor. “We began the process of creating a new opera for the Canadian Opera Company several years ago, and I’m very proud to say that we are now at the stage where we can make the news public,” says COC General Director Alexander Neef. “Bringing a world premiere to the COC’s mainstage is a significant undertaking for the company and we’re proud to say that all the elements are now in place to make a strong project. Rufus and I have been talking about what Hadrian would look like for at least three years now and I’m very excited about the musical and dramatic direction that this piece will take.” Hadrian will be Wainwright’s second opera. “I’m thrilled to be setting out on this epic journey with the COC and look forward to once again diving into the deep end, a requirement on all fronts in the world of opera,” Wainwright says. Hadrian is scheduled for World Premiere in COC’s 2018/2019 Season. For more info visit the Canadian Opera Company website here www.coc.ca

Chivas is known to throw a flurry of events throughout the city. Their signature soiree of the year, labelled “Chivas 1801“, held at Sassafraz in Yorkville seemed like it was going to be proper, sophisticated and uptight but it turned into a bit of a fun party where guests got to loosen their ties and kick up their heels. Celebrating some of the finer things in life: Mambacho cigars were paired with Chivas, GotStyle showed off their swanky sport jackets and gave out pocket squares, Mankind did some on-site grooming, Bellosound laid down the grooves accompanied by a saxophone player and DJ Starting from Scratch brought the guests to the dance floor to round out the night. And of course there were fine Chivas cocktails to be had including plenty of their 18 year old variety. It was a great way to end the series of Chivas events for this year. Guests in attendance included former Blue Jay Roberto Alomar, former Maple Leafs Curtis Joseph, and MuchMusic’s Liz Trinnear. For info on Chivas visit www.chivas.com or on Facebook here.

Boldly placing a Mexican taco restaurant in Toronto’s Korea town on Bloor Street, Playa Cabana’s empire expands with Korean-influenced Mexican taco cuisine. Barrio Coreano is the 4th addition to Dave Sidhu’s successful chain. Taco varieties include Korean beef, grilled octopus with wasabi salsa, spicy carnita, yuzu tuna, and chipotle kampungki chicken. I recommend the octopus and beef. Each taco was stuffed with generous amounts of ingredients and always paired with a fresh lime wedge. The Korean flavours continue into the drinks where you can get refreshed with interesting choices such a sCho-jito, Soju Sangria, Kequila Marma, Kimchi Sour and Dave’s Margarita. The venue is purposefully loud with bright neon lights which is not as bad as it sounds. In fact, I had such a great time had to force myself to leave. Looking forward to a future visit! Barrio Coreano is located at 642 Bloor Street West. Check out photos from the opening festivities where even the friendly staff from the other Playa Cabana locations came out to celebrate.

Hush Hush party by New Collection for the TPL Foundation

It was definitely a Saturday night to remember with DJs and open bar at the intimately-sized after-hours party at the incredible and spacious Bloor/Gladstone branch. And it was not just a great party for the sake of a great party: it was all in support of the Toronto Public Library Foundation. I really enjoyed all the careful attention to details of this well put-together event thrown by New Collection, The Toronto Public Library Foundation’s young patrons group. Even though it was the inaugural event, you could tell this was very well thought out. Everything was top notch: the decor, the entertainment by DJ Fathom and DJ GeeWizz, spoken word poet, magician Jonathan Pollock, and “Hush Hush” tattoos. It was great that there was enough drink and food stations (delectable oysters, gourmet donuts) to make the party more than a typical crowded-perpetually-standing-in-line party. Rather it was pleasant, spacious and enjoyable on all fronts. Even TV reporters and police officers came by with big smiles for this unique occasion. Fun prizes were given out as well including e-book readers and a flight from Porter Airlines. Proving that libraries aren’t always uptight and stuffy, bravo to all the organizers for throwing an incredible “party in the stacks” to remember in support of the busiest library system in the world. Also, check out our coverage from Book Lover’s Ball 2013. The next Book Lover’s Ball in support of the Toronto Public Library Foundation is on February 6, 2014. Details are at www.bookloversball.ca ABOUT THE TORONTO PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION The Toronto Public Library Foundation was established in 1997 as a registered charity. Since its inception, Toronto Public Library Foundation has raised over $55 million in support of Toronto Public Library priority needs. The Foundation’s long-range goal is to build an endowment fund that will generate sufficient income to support enhanced library programs, collections and services in perpetuity. Located in Toronto’s financial district at Yonge and Wellington, one of downtown’s custom tailor shops, Garrison Bespoke, has caught the attention of tons of international media earlier this month. Using nanotechnology, this three-piece pin-stripped custom-tailored suit is lined with carbon nanotube material and can stop a bullet by dispersing the energy of the impact like how a soccer net stops a soccer ball. I talked to David at Garrison Bespoke and according to him it’s the first time he’s aware of Canadian fashion making news in GQ. “After receiving requests from high-profile clients who travel to dangerous places for work, we set out to develop a lightweight, fashion-forward bulletproof suit as a more discreet and stylish alternative to wearing a bulky vest underneath,” said Michael Nguyen, co-owner and bespoke tailor of Garrison Bespoke. The custom-made bulletproof suit starts at $20,000. The crowd was jumping on their feet as Classified performed and the mosh pit went wild for Captain Morgan as he crowd surfed. Classified also found a fan that came up on stage and rapped beside him. It was pretty impressive how she kept up without breaking a sweat. Silver and soda was my favourite Captain Morgan drink. Thanks Captain Morgan for a great night! On October 18, 2013, the 3rd annual Panda Ball was held at the Four Seasons Hotel starting with an elegant reception with 350 special guests including Commander Chris Hadfield, Steven Page, Kevin O’Leary and Ziya Tong. The former Mayor of Toronto, David Miller, was in attendance as well as he became CEO and President of WWF Canada recently in September 2013. “It is incredibly gratifying to have community leaders, artists, entrepreneurs and great business minds all come together for WWF to create a future in which humans live in harmony with nature”, says David Miller, President and CEO, WWF Canada. “This year’s recipient of our environmental leader award, Michael de Pencier, embodies the passion and generosity that is critical to the success of WWF.” As the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Steven Page pointed out how lucky we as Canadians are to be rich in wild life and wild places, so it is our responsibility to take care of them with pride. Canada’s own highly-revered astronaut, Commander Chris Hadfield, took to the podium as well and described how he saw Earth from outer space calling for everyone to do more to protect the planet. Guests at the evening also got to hear him sing and play guitar. WWF Canada highlighted the importance of the Last Ice Area project, which aims to protect this important ice habitat for polar bears and other Arctic species. Young singing sensation, Carly Rose Sonenclar, filled the room with emotion and Steven Page and his band ended the evening with a bang. The evening exceeded the goal of raising $500,000 for WWF Canada in support of their important conservation work that affects us all. ABOUT WWF (World Wildlife Fund) WWF (World Wildlife Fund) is Canada’s largest international conservation organization with the active support of more than 150,000 Canadians. Posing with The Fly

On Thursday October 30th, 2013, the TIFF Bell Lightbox had a launch party that spanned 3 floors of the spacious, modern venue to mark the opening of the largest exhibition celebrating all the works of David Cronenberg, one of Canada’s most prolific and iconic filmmakers of our time. Cronenberg is one of the film industry’s originators of what is commonly known as the body horror or venereal horror genre (take the classic movie The Fly), for example.

The 27th annual Teddy Bear Affair was held on November 2, 2013 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This year the South Building halls were transformed to the sunny, beach scenery of the California coast and the heydays of Route 66. On the walls, panoramas of sunsets, cliff sides, beaches, and piers were projected to provide an immersive environment. Palm trees lined the pathways and classic cars were on display. There were models dressed as lifeguards and even a large sand sculpture of a teddy bear that was being sculpted live. The “Exquisite California” theme also carried over to the dining experience. The menu was prepared and designed by none other than Chef Charlie Ayers, who flew in for this special occasion. Most of you will know Chef Ayers as Google’s first executive chef. The table setting and even the table and chairs themselves had the California feel. The centre pieces were sand castles that one lucky guest from each table got to take home. And how could a west coast themed gala be complete without the live entertainment of Brian Wilson, cofounder and songwriter of the Beach Boys! Wilson and the band performed classics such as California Dreamin’ to the crowds’ delight. People were dancing and cheering, and genuinely having a great time hearing favourite songs that brought a sense of nostalgia. Theo Tams of Canadian Idol fame also provided entertainment earlier in the night, and comedian Sean Cullen was the master of ceremonies. Throughout the evening there was a lot of excitement and activities, including a pre-dinner cocktail reception, palm and aura readings, handwriting analysis, and photo stations where you can take your picture to get a personalized souvenir of the night. Of course there was also the silent and live auctions where you could bid on numerous items ranging from clothing and jewelry, to sports memorabilia, to cultural experiences and even vacations. Volunteers roamed the floor holding teddy bears that you can purchase to enter the raffle for one of three amazing jewelry packages. “Miss California” was on hand to promote the raffle and greet the winners, looking stunning in her gown and the grand prize jewelry. All of the proceeds of this event go towards the Children’s Aid Foundation – a charity dedicated to providing skills and help to at-risk children. This year, a record-breaking $2 million dollars were raised, easily surpassing last year’s total. We look forward to attending next year! Mark your calendars for November 1, 2014 when the charms and vistas of Italy becomes the theme. It was another extravagant night of masks and intrigue at the 20th Venetian Ball gala. More than 1,000 guests came to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to support and celebrate 20 years of one of Toronto’s top charity galas raising funds and awareness for Villa Charities, providing care for seniors, in particular individuals with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. Guests were greeted at the reception by Montreal’s electronic harpist M’Michelle, accompanied by DJ Alex Beaudoin-Tousignant while whetting appetites with a plethora of antipasti offerings. The evening’s host, Dina Pugliese (Citytv’s Breakfast Television), welcomed guests to their seated dinner consisting of a grand Italian-inspired five-course meal while enjoying the dance performance by the Columbus Centre School of Dance. After dinner Canada’s own singer-songwriter Paul Anka took to the stage to perform unforgettable classics including My Way, Diana, Put Your Head on My Shoulder, and She’s a Lady. It was great to see him really interact with guests while performing, getting right in there and engaging with guests and earning two standing ovations. If that wasn’t enough there was a lavish array of dessert choices from 10 stations from some of Toronto’s top pastry chefs accompanied by fine espresso and cappuccino. Live auction items included a one-week stay at Marchesi Fumanelli’s Squarano Estate in San Floriano, Italy, and a Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix 2014 vacation package in Monza, Italy, along with a Rolex Daytona watch. Kudos to Villa Charities and the Venetian Ball committee for another gala of grandeur that always hits the mark as one of Toronto’s top charity galas.
