Celebrating their 25th annual Dragon Ball, the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation‘s signature fundraising event pulled out all the stops for this commemorative occasion in this Year of the Horse in accordance with the Chinese zodiac. Over 1,000 patrons were in attendance at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (for me it was conveniently taking place in the same North Building as the Interior Design Show last weekend). It’s also very timely to start getting in the mood for Chinese New Year celebrations (officially tomorrow, January 31st!) It’s well attended by top business leaders, media personalities and politicians including Mayor Rob Ford of Toronto, Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga and Mayor Frank Scarpitti of Markham, Olivia Chow and more. Everything about Dragon Ball is grand including the silent auction, live auction and raffle prizes. The pre-dinner reception is also, always of grand scale and for this 25th occasion it was no different including the largest table of oysters and clams by Raw Bar, foie gras offerings from George Brown and Humber College culinary schools as well as an amazing special Michelin 3-Star Chef. One amazing highlight this year was that the dinner menu was designed by Chef Alvin Leung, star of the new MasterChef Canada TV show on CTV (and fondly named “Demon Chef”). And, yes, he’s also recently been crowned a Michelin 3-Star Chef. He demonstrated his “X-treme” cuisine at the gala reception mixing ice cream with the Chinese liquors Moutai and “Rose Dew”. Chef Alvin Leung’s gala dinner consisted of a fusion menu of 3 courses where he kicked things off with the prosperity toss “Lo Hei” consisting of a combination of coleslaw with salmon terrine and preserved kumquat. The main course was an incredibly savoury beef tenderloin serving with chocolate Bakkutteh sauce. My mouth is still watering as I write this. There was much fanfare with Toronto’s own headline-making sensation, Mayor Rob Ford. Sorry, there was no drama to report upon. Everyone was polite to him while requesting photo opportunities and Ford patiently obliged to each and every single photo request. So, that’s why you didn’t hear about him in the news, unlike all the antics at the following Monday at the Toronto Region Board of Trade. Supporters of the Yee Hong’s Dragon Ball are always treated with respect in the spirit of helping one another with the ongoing, united goal of improving geritric care. It’s also one of the few charity galas in Toronto where you can still win a car (a brand new 2014 Lexus IS 250 RWD valued at $44,555.28 donated by Lexus Canada) in the raffle grand prize draw with no strings attached and not for just a weekend or a lease. City’s Melanie Ng and Roger Petersen were the emcees. There was lots of entertainment including a grand traditional opening ceremony with 25 lions and a dragon Live music started off with a performance by Musique chinoise Yuefang, a group of 9 young female musicians to usher in the Year of the Horse. There was also a 40 minute mini-concert by “Asia’s Queen of Song”, Teresa Carpio, and her beautiful Broadway musical singing daughter T.V. Carpio. Yee Hong Founder and Foundation Chair Dr. Joseph Wong fondly describes Dragon Ball as “a shining symbol of a community’s spirit of selfless generosity.” He said the 25th anniversary “is an occasion to take stock: to celebrate the past but also, and more importantly, to look ahead to the next 25 years.” And in reference to a recent Toronto Star editorial “Our elders deserve better“, Dr Joseph Wong said “Today, our major challenge is to close the gap between the cost of all the services we provide, from palliative care to day programs, and the financial support we receive.  Governments can give only so much. And it’s simply not enough.” Over the last 25 years, the Dragon Ball has raised about $25 million for geriatric care and other services and programs for the seniors provided by the four Yee Hong centres in Scarborough, Markham and Mississauga. Today, Yee Hong is serving over 15,000 seniors and their families and with Canada’s aging population you know this type of need will become increasingly more important. Thanks for allowing me the honour and opportunity to attend again this year, wishing much success to the Yee Hong for another 25 years. Following in the footsteps of the popular Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, Samsung’s flagship full-size tablet right now is the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. It’s one of the top tablet contenders to the Apple iPad Air. Featuring an ultra-thin profile, sharp resolution and a fast processor, it’s a great multimedia, all-purpose, go-anywhere tablet. Compared to other smartphones and tablets including the iPad Air, the Note 10.1 does really well at multitasking with the ability to open apps side-by-side. But what really stands out is the stylus (dubbed “S-Pen”) with improved features over the previous Note 10.1 iteration. You can just pull out the S-Pen, draw a rectangle and you get to start a new application including a YouTube video or a notepad.  Running apps side by side and advanced tasks such as drag-and-dropping across those windows make for great possibilities in getting tasks done. There’s more versatile uses shown in Samsung’s hands-on video above. Here’s just some of the key highlights Improved S-Pen with features such as Air Command, Action Memo, Scrapbook and Pen Window. 8MP camera at the back with the ability to record full HD videos 10.1-inch WQXGA TFT screen with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels An Exynos 8-core processor 3GB of RAM A microSD card slot for extra storage beyond the 16, 32, or 64 GB storage that is included A large 8220 mAh battery Operating System: Android 4.3 Jelly Bean “The new GALAXY Note 10.1 is our most progressive 10-inch tablet yet, delivering one of the best viewing and multitasking experiences on the market,” said Paul Brannen, Vice President Enterprise Business Division, Samsung Canada. “Not only is this device both fashionable and portable, but it also demonstrates our continued focus on constant product innovation and our commitment to providing a variety of products that Canadians can choose from to help make their lives easier and more enjoyable.” By the way, here a few previously unreleased photos of the Galaxy Note 3 party at 99 Sudbury where many got to have their first hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch which pairs with the Galaxy Note 3. Interior design professionals and firms from all around the world gather at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to showcase and inspire with the latest in interior design trends at the annual Interior Design Show taking place this weekend. This year’s Interior Design Show 2014 focuses on lighting with the theme of “See the Light” and getting the right lighting in interior design can set the perfect tone. Must-see exhibits include IKEA, Miele, Caesarstone, Andrew Richards Designs, Solo House and Korhani Home (featuring designer rugs from the fashion label Korhani with appearances in Toronto Fashion Week). Personally I always enjoy seeing the Enomatic wine system (restaurants in Toronto that have this innovative wine dispensing system include Destingo and Touro Brazilian Steakhouse). I really liked the Solo Home exhibit featuring the latest technology including a 4K HDTV and Sennheiser home theatre installed by Bay Bloor radio. A Solo Home like this starts from $93,500 Caesarstone showcases their specialties in kitchen countertops with the theme of drop-in cabinets in collaboration with Raw Edges design. Check out the Caesarstone video below. UPDATE: The availability of the Glenmorangie Ealanta has been changed to March 6th. The direct sales URL is www.vintagesshoponline.com I was lucky to have the opportunity to be part of the exclusive preview tasting of the new highly-acclaimed fourth annual release from the Glenmorangie Private Edition range called Ealanta. In Scots Gaelic, “Ealanta” translates to “skilled and ingenious“. With the Glenmorangie roots held strongly in Cadboll, Scotland, the award-winning Private Edition release is aged in virgin American white oak casks originating from the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri, USA. The anticipation of this fourth annual award-winning release is catalysed by the latest issue of 2014 Whisky Bible, produced by Jim Murray, one of the world’s leading whisky experts. In his 2014 Whisky Bible (which happens to be the 10th annual), over 1,100 new whiskies were sampled and Murray paid tribute to the quality of Ealanta by describing it as having “one of the longest finishes of any Scotch this year.. and borderline perfection.” It scored 97.5 out of 100 points. Murray also says “Glenmorangie Ealanta pipped others to the post because it went out and did something different; not only did it blow one away with its deftness, beauty and elegance, but it gave an aroma and taste profile completely new to me in over 30 years of tasting whisky.” Adding to the testament that Glenmorangie does extensive research in the spirit of the theme “wood makes the whiskey”, Dr Bill Lumsden, The Glenmorangie Company’s Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation, said: “This is a wonderful award for us and testament to the ongoing success of our Private Edition range. Jim Murray has been a leading judge of whisky for three decades so this is a major coup for us.” If you get the chance you really, really have to try this incredibly long and enjoyable journey of intense flavours described as candied oranges, sugar coated almonds, sweet vanilla and marzipan. At the end you’re left with a taste of oak-derived spices – clove, ginger and a hint of aniseed. AVAILABILITY Ealanta will retail for $165.95 starting February 18th at the LCBO via call centre AND for the first time ever, the LCBO will allow for online orders and purchase via the LCBO’s direct purchase website. We’ll share those URL details when they become available. So mark your calendars for February 18th and in the meantime Sláinte! as they say in Scotland or, in other words, “on your health”! A wedding setup in Austin's Gallery

I always love visiting One King West Hotel & Residence. It’s a substantially tall hotel and condo building with 51 stories centrally located right at Yonge and King Street, accessible via the underground PATH and right above the TTC King subway station. The soaring high ceilings, majestic décor in the Grand Banking Hall and the many other versatile event spaces make it a destination for tourists, Torontonians, event and wedding planners. There are frequently many memorable events that take place at the Grand Banking Hall with it’s soaring high 45 foot ceilings including Stella Artois a few years ago, the Bailey’s Irish Cream inspired Lucian Matis fashion show, and many more. Many exciting things are set to come up at One King West including the celebration of it’s centennial anniversary starting July 1, 2014 and the beginning of multi-million dollar renovations. MEETING AND EVENT SPACES Venue spaces include The Grand Banking Hall, The Vault, Chairman’s Boardroom, Commerce Rooms and the King, Melinda and Austin Galleries, Fourteen Hundred and Fifteen Hundred; each are used for corporate meetings, product launches, weddings and galas. The Grand Banking Hall, with its soaring 45-foot ceilings, is the place to be. It’s an incredible venue space for wedding ceremonies, receptions, corporate dinners, galas and more; the original 100-foot tellers’ counter now boasts to be one of the longest bars in Canada. Located on the 12th floor, the Austin Gallery (pictured at the top of this post) is a 2,000 square foot space that can be used as a wedding, meeting or event space with private rooms adjacent to the main gallery and a wrap around balcony overlooking this gallery space. The Chairman’s Boardroom, previously the private domain of the Dominion Bank’s board of directors, is used for smaller receptions and meetings; much of the historical essence has been preserved, with its richly-paneled walls and German formosa marble fireplace. Even One King West’s vault, simply dubbed “The Vault” is an interesting room to hold events. It’s a great backdrop to make any intimate event memorable. The additions of the new executive suites which launched recently this past Fall 2013, named the Fourteen Hundred and the Fifteen Hundred, are a versatile two-floor multi-use hospitality and executive summer. I especially love the wrap-around terrace, dazzling views, and open concept of the Fifteen Hundred. It’s sure to be an event hot-spot this summer. Read our coverage of it here. Visit here for more details on all the event spaces at One King West. HIGHLIGHTS Designated Ontario Heritage Building The Vault, as the original bank vault is now known, has been used as the backdrop for various fashion magazine editorials and featured in Hollywood films such as Red, Max Payne and Jumper. The historical portion of the building will celebrate its centennial on July 1, 2014. This year One King West will begin a multi-million dollar renovation to all hotel suites. Celebrating women and raising awareness of ovarian cancer, the annual LOVE HER charity gala takes place across the country in Vancouver (in March) and Calgary (in May). In Toronto, the celebration goes down at the Liberty Grand on February 27, 2014. With a fashion show by Andrews fashion studio, a “fireman’s raffle”, silent auction and live musical performances by Juno award-winning singer Divine Brown and popular violinist Sofie Serafino, it’s sure to be a great night for a great women’s cause! The evening will be hosted by Robert Herjavec (Dragon’s Den, Shark Tank) with Canada AM’s Beverly Thomson and Marci Ien. “We are so thrilled to announce the national series of the 2014 LOVE HER events,” said Elisabeth Baugh, CEO, Ovarian Cancer Canada. “The success of the 2013 events was overwhelming. We received very positive feedback from all of the survivors, Canadian celebrity hosts, sponsors and guests. We want to continue to raise awareness and funds to make a significant difference in the lives of women living with ovarian cancer, their friends and family, and help change the present reality for those affected by this fatal disease.” Currently 17,000 women in Canada are afflicted by this disease; LOVE HER pays tribute to these women by helping to raise awareness of the most overlooked and under-diagnosed of women’s cancer. Unfortunately there is no screening test for ovarian cancer and the often late detection of this disease results in a five-year survival rate of less than 30%. Help support the LOVE HER event’s goals by celebrating women and raise awareness of the most fatal women’s cancer. Here’s the run-down of the gala’s agenda. 6:00pm – reception 7:00pm – main welcome remarks with Bev and Marci from CanadaAM 7:10pm – Divine Brown to perform 2 songs 7:30pm – Karen Campbell Award Presentation to Dr. Narod 7:35pm – Fashion show by Andrews 7:50pm – Survivor Bailey Urquhart speaks 8:00pm – Live auction For more info and to purchase tickets visit www.love-her.ca Check out Ovarian Cancer Canada’s video

Brittney Kuczynski

I’m lucky to be able to meet a lot of interesting people when I’m frequently out documenting the best that Toronto has to offer and one of the people that really stands out is the young and inspiring mover-and-shaker, Brittney Kuczynski. Brittney is an avid cultural philanthropist with a much sought-after job on Bay Street, setting a prime example of what a young professional can achieve. Her Linkedin page reads impressively, playing a leadership role in some of Toronto’s premier philanthropic initiatives; serving as the former Chair of the Oceana Ball and Editor-in-Chief of Oceana Magazine, Co-Chair of the inaugural Toronto Public Library Foundation’s Hush Hush party, Co-Chair of the 2014 Power Ball, and fresh out of the oven in 2013, the President & Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Fabric (a charity-based Canadian cultural yearbook available in Chapters/Indigo and other high-end retailers across the country) launched annually at the lavish Le Grand Bal in support of Oolagen Youth Mental Health. An activist of Canadian arts and culture, in the winter of 2012 Brittney announced the inception of a new major event, The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA), set to take place on February 1st, 2014. How old are you? I’m 24 years old. What motivates you and when did you start getting into philanthropy? Brittney and charity have always been synonymous; as a child I recall asking for World Vision children for my birthday, which have now flourished into an array of philanthropic initiatives. Is it true you were a contestant in Miss Universe Canada in 2008? What was that like? I was. Being an enormous geek in high school, it was a fun experience that enabled me to meet some remarkable women, such as my great friend Elena Semikina, who was crowned in 2010 and is now an admirable Documentary Film Producer. How did you start the Oceana Ball, a premiere fundraising gala for the Herbie Fund at the age of 19? What learnings did you get out of it? I was very fortunate to be introduced to the Herbie Fund at the age of 19 via my cousin, Alexis Kuczynski, who celebrated 10 years cancer free (thanks to SickKids Hospital) with a fundraising initiative for Herbie, and was subsequently inspired to start the Oceana Ball. The event grew vastly with the help of my family, and Jackie Gideon, my Co-Chair who is a makeup artist and producer extraordinaire. My four years experience Chairing the event and publishing the magazine was a lot of fun and a ton of work, especially while starting out a career in the demanding world of finance. My biggest learning curve stemmed from the sponsorship acquisition process as I was commonly asked “why not just write a cheque directly to the charity?” I have since refocused my initiatives on having dual-platforms that include both financial beneficiary (fiscal prudency is core to my fundraising philosophy) and outreach that is accretive to Canadian culture and inspires patrons to feel good about celebrating the art of giving. My new foundation, Canadian Fabric, endeavors to use fashion as a vehicle to endorse Canadian cultural sovereignty by celebrating Canadian achievement, while simultaneously popularizing and financially benefitting low-profile organizations. Our inaugural year beneficiary is Oolagen Youth Mental Health. Of all the cities you could focus your philanthropic efforts on, why did you choose Toronto? The truth is I’m a tree hugging Canadian; yet have a hard time identifying with the Canadian cliché. As you’ll read in my Editor’s letter, I don’t drink beer, say the word “eh” and I’ve never made love in a canoe. Our country is home to so many exceptional ideas, people, and artists that I believe play an integral role the evolution of our cultural identity; my goal is to make our country better acknowledge and celebrate it. In addition to being an increasingly vibrant city (with great shopping), Toronto is home to an exceptionally supportive network of cultural and philanthropic innovators that I am honored to work with and continuously learn from. Tell us a little about your day job? Monday to Friday, 7:00AM until the market closes; you’ll find me on the trading floor of Industrial Alliance Securities. On that note, The Wolf of Wall Street is a far departure from reality on a trading desk – at least since the 1980’s/90’s (or so I hear). To describe my job quite simply, I spend my day following the markets; learning about and analyzing companies; having intellectually stimulating conversation with some of the country’s brightest fund managers and analysts; and of course, trading stocks! I love my job; it consumes me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and not a moment of it is dull. What’s the secret to juggling so many amazing charitable initiatives including publishing a nationally-distributed magazine and playing a leadership role in several premier events? Teamwork! I have an exceptionally supportive family; my mom, Donna Kuczynski, who is a serial entrepreneur, is a true miracle maker. Canadian Fabric magazine is produced entirely on a voluntary basis with the help of nearly 150 generous people made up of Art Directors, Editors, writers, photographers, designers, stylists, hair and makeup, coordinators, interns, and my fantastic Editorial Board lead by Suzanne Rogers – the most forward-thinking Honorary Chair and leader anyone could ask for, and our event Chair, Sylvia Mantella – an extraordinary fashion enthusiast who always encourages thinking outside the box. I met my best friend, Vicky Milner, 4 years ago when she worked at the Herbie Fund. In spring 2013, she joined CAFA as Managing Director, and has since played a significant in helping CAFA flourish into a true national milestone event. I’m very blessed to have gathered a strong support network of friends and colleagues who are profoundly instrumental in making far-fetched dreams come true. Are there any other exciting projects in the works? No projects in the pipeline as of now, I plan to build out all existing initiatives over the next few years before tackling anything new. What advice can you give to others who want to make a difference? Finding a great cause that inspires you is essential; it’s truly the driving force behind any successful philanthropist. I wasn’t planning on taking on any new projects until I stepped inside the horrid conditions of one of the Oolagen patient houses (home to 8 kids suffering from severe social and mental health issues, and when I visited, parts of the ceiling were starting to fall), and it completely transformed my next few years … I started Canadian Fabric! Similarly, my experience publishing over the past 4 years has introduced me to some truly exceptional artists that, for some odd reason, I, a mainstream finance girl with no affiliation to fashion, hadn’t heard of… that lead to CAFA! Also check out this City feature on Brittney Kuczynski at Oceana Ball in 2010. Also check out this video about Canadian Fabric magazine Hogtown Films Be sure to look for Canadian Fabric magazine at Chapters/Indigo and other high-end retailers now across Canada. We wish her the best of luck at the CAFA gala on February 1st and success in all of her future endeavours.

If you haven't heard of any of these beers, then I'm sorry, we can't be friends.

In case you didn’t notice our announcement last month, the Jack Astor’s restaurant chain is now featuring a “Winter Fling” fest, encouraging customers to stray from their usual beers and have a “fling” with craft beers. You can enjoy a selection of craft beers from now until January 19th at all Jack Astor’s locations. The list of beers available in Ontario locations include Mill Street Organic Lager, Tankhouse Ale, Muskoka Cream Ale, Flying Monkey Hoptical Illusion Pale Ale, Granville Island Lions Winter Ale. While I always enjoy Flying Monkey Hoptical Illusion Pale Ale and one of my go-to beers is Mill St Tankhouse Ale, the only one I hadn’t tried until last night was the Granville Island Lions Winter Ale. It’s worth a try if you enjoy dark beers. It’s a premium malt with aromatic specialty hops and a smooth vanilla finish while some would describe it as having a chocolate or caramel taste to it. For pairing with these fine craft beers, Jack Astor’s serves up Cluckin’ Chicken Dippers ($9.82). These tender chicken pieces are served with unique salts and sauces to sprinkle, dip, mix and match to create chicken dipper combinations you can call your own. The Winter Fling Festival menu also includes a creamy Asiago Shrimp & Smoked Mozza Ravioli ($16.74) and a hearty Holiday Brie Chicken dish served with Jack’s mashed potatoes and sweet onion gravy ($17.97). I really enjoyed the brie chicken with honey dijon sauce and generous amounts of pecans, almonds, and dried cranberries. Not to mention the two slices of brie melted on top of the chicken breast. For dessert, the rich and decadent Cherry On Top Chocolate Trifle is a divine steal at $3.97. I’m looking forward to visiting again soon and you should act fast as well before this Winter Fling craft beer fest ends January 19th! I think this campaign is a good thing and I hope it sticks because the more awareness that’s spread of craft beers (or at the very least better beers in general), the less I will have to run into the unfortunate situations where “bars” only serve Coors Light and Molson Canadian… in bottles (aka a bad situation goes worse). So please let that never happen again. We’re not Americans who are known for drinking watered-down beer. So do me a favour and drink beer like a real Canadian, please! For more info visit www.jackastors.com/craftbeer.aspx Speaking of their craft beer offerings, Jack Astor’s on Front Street is having a “Mill Street Organic & Tankhouse Party” on Thursday, January 16th. RSVP to Vivian at vto@sircorp.com

Grilled calamari with caramelized onions, kalamata olives, capers, local grape tomatoes, roasted garlic

Located in trendy Queen West just a block west of Bathurst (right next to the Raq n’ Waq pool hall), Destingo Kitchen + Bar is a comfortable, cozy and casual Italian restaurant. The word “Destingo” is a playful abbreviation for “destined to go“. In the winter season, it’s a very intimate space and in warmer weather it’s sure to be a trendy hot spot having a large terrace equipped with patio umbrellas and outdoor heaters as needed. Large doors on either side of the entrance swing wide open, bringing the outdoors right inside. Relatively new, it opened in the fall of 2013, taking over the furniture store, Pavilion. After visiting for a grand opening event and then also for a brunch, my third experience at Destingo was for dinner and it was quite a memorable one at that complete with attentive service and a great selection of wine by the glass (more about that later). Owner Monika Vacca is the former co-owner of Vaticano restaurant in Yorkville with former husband/executive chef Felice Vacca. I heard a few good things about the prosciutto di buffala (proscuitto and buffalo mozzarella) but I didn’t get a chance to try it myself due to being busy with other amazing antipasti such as the grilled calamari and sautéed wild shrimp. You can’t go wrong with a lot of the dishes given the care and attention to detail into each and every serving. At the reasonable price points, the quality and value you get might just exceed your expectations. You can also choose to order the pasta dishes as gluten free, if you so desire. All desserts are made in-house including their signature tiramisu and boy, that’s how you end a meal: great dessert and aromatic drip coffee. While the food and service take centre stage, another interesting attraction is the enomatic wine system behind the bar. This is where bottles of wine are kept freshly sealed in a wine dispensing system so that you can try premium wines by the glass without having to pay for the whole bottle. So, in staying true to authentic Italian fare while not being afraid to modernize with an enomatic wine system, you can really taste and appreciate all the effort that goes into the entire experience even down to the house-made desserts conveniently near all the action in Queen West. I’m looking forward to revisiting in the summer for patio season! Check out our photos below. For breakfast options, they’re open 7 days a week starting at 7am including smoothies and other healthy options and free drip coffee or tea with every breakfast entree. For brunch service, they’re conveniently open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm. Check out this starter I had: WINTERLICIOUS Available for this season’s Winterlicious, check out their lunch and dinner prix fixe menu. By the way, if you’re interested in enomatic wine systems, I’m told by a representative at Bevtech that the largest commercial enomatic wine system in the GTA is at the Touro Brazilian steakhouse. And even bigger ones are in Montreal. The only home version dubbed “Enoliving” that I saw featured at the Delicious Food Show is not available in Canada yet but hopefully soon! Destingo is located at 741 Queen St. West Toronto, Ontario M6J 1G1 (647) 748-3113 For more info visit www.destingo.ca Check out their video of the making of Destingo restaurant. Founded in Quebec, there are two Hotel Le Germain locations by the Groupe Germain in downtown Toronto and they boast being the pioneer of the boutique hotel concept in Canada. Nestled in between the Air Canada Centre, Real Sports Bar and the restaurants, Aria and E11even, you might not have noticed the elegant boutique Hotel St. Germain at Maple Leaf Square. But if you’ve ever been to a Leafs game or any big ticket concert at the Air Canada Centre, you would know it’s a bit of an ordeal trying to get out as everyone goes home or goes to fill up the nearest bars. Hotel St Germain’s PLAY Lounge is another convenient, easily accessible option with plenty of TVs set to a warmly intimate and modern atmosphere serving up local draught beer, wine by the glass or bottle and specialty cocktails like maple bacon caesars. Available for lunch and dinner with creations by Chef Ken Zess, the menu features Canadian ingredients with interesting choices such as quail, bison burgers, or even a “Chef’s Creation” with whatever is fresh that day. Some of the suites and meeting rooms have a great view of Maple Leaf Square and even large terraces to enjoy the lively vibe right in front of the Air Canada Centre. Cheeky, sports-themed names for the boardrooms included the Offensive Zone, Defensive Zone and the Penalty Box. In the suites it was interesting to see the glass showers with views from the bedroom for exhibitionists and photographs hanging above the bed featuring Leafs or Raptors players. Even the hallways have nice touches such as fresh apples and hot tea free for the taking. It’s all about the details. While December is relatively quiet for special events in Toronto compared to other months due to the holidays, one thing the rest of us staying in the city get to look forward to is Kardinal Offishall’s annual Christmas bash. This year’s event, entitled “Free the City” was the 15th annual party held at Muzik with Nelly Furtado as a co-host in support of the Free the Children charity. Kardinal travelled to Kenya last year to visit the Free the Children projects firsthand. Inspired by his travels there, Kardinal’s goal is to raise enough funds to send 10 inner city youth there to volunteer and help the Free the Children communities in Summer 2014. Elusive tickets to this event were won and distributed by Mr. International himself over Twitter. Radio station Flow 93.5 and DJ Lissa Monet were others that gave out tickets and luckily we were also able to do a giveaway (thanks Ashley and Sarah!). In attendance we had Nelly Furtado, Maestro Fresh Wes, Karl Wolf, Shawn Desman, Stacey McKenzie, Lyriq Bent, Jessica Tyler, Sitara Hewitt, the Toronto Argo cheerleaders and many many more. It was great to be able to rub elbows with them all. The DJ Lineup included Starting from Scratch, DJ Lissa Monet, Court Jester, DR. Jay, and D’BANDIT. Marc Kielburger, co-founder of the Free the Children charity, was on hand to talk about the charity he started with his brother Craig when they were kids. Live auction items were up for grabs including dinner at Ki with Kardinal Offishall, Nelly Furtado and Marc Kielburger. It was a great night and Kardinal Offishall is always a great entertainer and host. If we had to choose who to profile for our very first featured person on this website, what better place to start than 10 year old eco-blogger, Hannah Alper. She started blogging when she was only 9 years old and has accomplished so much already. Subjects that Hannah have written about in the past year include eco-friendly living, fair trade, bullying, clean water and child labour. As stated on her blog, “I started this blog so that I could share my passions including the environment, social action, and people and things that inspire me. I believe that the little things that we all do add up to make a big difference.” Her list of accomplishments is long and extensive. She’s been on television on Canada AM, The Marilyn Dennis Show, App Central, CBC’s Fresh Air, The George Stromboulopoulos Show and much more. She has been featured in Chickadee Magazine and named as a “Champion of the Earth” in Owl Magazine. She also recently wrote a post for Yahoo worldwide on her advice for new-school wary kids and has a spotlight in Scholastic’s Choices Magazine. She’s proven her talents by giving motivational speeches at local schools, leading the charge to collect 97,500 pennies for Free the Children’s clean water projects. She travelled across North America on the Free The Children’s We Day tour (founded by household names in activism, Craig and Marc Kielburger) as a featured speaker. Watch how effective and captivating she is in this great interview with Band Aid’s Midge Ure on the importance of using your voice, power of music and community. During this holiday season with the spirit of giving, it’s pretty inspiring to look at what this 10 year old is doing. As the interview above says, it starts with spreading awareness and getting others involved, too. Thanks for the motivation, Hannah, and keep up the great work! UPDATE: Our $50 Jack Astor’s gift card giveaway is now closed! Congrats to Bobbi Jo P., enjoy your craft beer winter fling! The Jack Astor’s restaurant chain is now featuring a “Winter Fling” campaign, encouraging customers to stray from their mainstream beers and have a “fling” with craft beers. With cheeky messaging like ‘let’s get hop and heavy’ and ‘are you beer-curious?’, it’s on now until January 19, 2014 at all Jack Astor’s locations. The list of beers available in Ontario locations include Mill Street Organic Lager, Tankhouse Ale, Muskoka Cream Ale, Flying Monkey Hoptical Illusion Pale Ale, Granville Island Lions Winter Ale. Don’t forget to scroll down for our contest details. I must be honest and say that many of these are my favourite flavourful beers. Tankhouse is one of my go-to beers and I always enjoy Flying Monkey Hoptical Illusion. Accompanying these crush-worthy craft beers, Jack Astor’s serves up its original Cluckin’ Chicken Dippers ($9.82). These tender chicken pieces are served with unique salts and sauces to sprinkle, dip, mix and match to create chicken dippers all of your own. The Winter Fling Festival menu also includes a creamy Asiago Shrimp & Smoked Mozza Ravioli ($16.74) and a hearty Holiday Brie Chicken dish served with Jack’s mashed potatoes and sweet onion gravy ($17.97). For dessert, enjoy a decadent Cherry On Top Chocolate Trifle ($3.97). “At Jack Astor’s, we’re all about being cheeky and playful. With this campaign, we tried to bring our guests new flavour experiences we know they’ll love tasting,” said Lauren Michell, vice president, marketing, Service Inspired Restaurants. “Our chefs have created some incredible new dishes that will quickly become old favourites and we’ve carefully selected a series of craft beers ideally suited for a ‘winter fling’ – we promise your regular beer won’t get bitter.” I think this campaign is a good thing and I hope it sticks because the more awareness of craft beers, the less I will have to run into the unfortunate situations where bars only serve Coors Light and Molson Canadian.. in bottles (ugh!). Let that never happen again. We’re not Americans who are known for drinking watered-down beer. So do me a favour and drink beer like a real Canadian, please! Chuck Hughes at Cook for the Cure 2013 | Photo: Nick Lee

Featuring an all-star lineup of chefs, the KitchenAid Cook for the Cure was a culinary showdown held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto on December 7th, 2013. Chefs included the Food Network’s Lynn Crawford, Chuck Hughes, Mark McEwan, Vikram Vij and Corbin Tomaszeski hosted by actor Dean McDermott alongside Tyler Florence (host of the Great Food Truck Race and Food Court Wars). The top 50 fundraisers for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation got to participate and compete in the Cook for the Cure culinary competition, splitting into 5 teams headed by each of the chefs. The big day started with a “Celebrity Chef School” session where the 50 participants were coached about ingredient picking to proper plating. Trade secrets were also revealed on food preparation, knife techniques, and methodology in advance of the high-pressure competition in the evening. Then the evening started with a cocktail reception including rubbing elbows and photo ops with the chefs, and bidding on silent auction items. After the first course, the scores were displayed and Team Vij was in the lead with 47.2 points from the judges followed by McEwan at 44.5 points. Team Crawford was 3rd at 41.5 points. Then after the second course, the competition was heating up with Team Vij at 90.2 points, Team Crawford at 81.5 and McEwan at 77.5 points. It was a tight race but at the end Chef Mark McEwan‘s team was declared the winner in a shocking comeback in the dessert course. I guess Vikram Vij took some risks in the dessert that didn’t score well with the judges but you must admire him for not playing it safe just to keep his lead. We got to hear a brave, emotional story of a breast cancer survivor and I could see more than few people were brought to tears. The live auction featured one-of-a-kind culinary experiences up for grabs from the Chefs including the one from Chuck Hughes, who refused to allow his bid to close until he got one more thousand to much hilarity. He’s a great sport and I’m glad he got it. It was a fun, friendly culinary competition all for the sake of creating a future without breast cancer. “I’d like to thank all of the fundraisers, sponsors and fabulous chefs who are supporting our vision of a future without breast cancer,” said Sandra Palmaro, CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), Ontario Region. “Donations from this event allow CBCF to continue to fund relevant, innovative research and support and advocate for the breast cancer community.” MORE PHOTOS About the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the leading community–driven organization in Canada dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer.  Our investments in innovative and relevant research and education have led to progress in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care. A Spurlesque girl riding the mechanical bull

Taking over the old London Tap House on 250 Adelaide St. West, the new country bar Rock ‘n’ Horse Saloon opened on December 4th in the downtown core. The country themed details go deep, from the mechanical bull all the way down to the bar stools with full-sized saddles. The launch party was packed featuring the Spurlesque dance group, door prizes, cupcakes, great food, giant margaritas and their signature drink, The Bulldog, which was a lime margarita with an upside-down Corona bottle. Definitely a fun treat. It boasts one of Toronto’s only mechanical bull. Guests in attendance included country stars Gord Bamford, Michelle Wright, Kira Isabella, radio host Paul McGuire, Rachel David (Rogers TV) and a few Toronto Argonaut players. The menu features corn dogs, chilli, BBQ entrees and the venue has plenty of screens for watching sports. “We pride ourselves on producing excellent pub fare with country home inspirations. Paying homage to seasonality and availability, you’re sure to find comfort here at the Rock ‘n’ Horse Saloon”, says Executive Chef Mark Crofton. Thursdays feature live music and weekend nights are about parties. See their website for more details about the schedule of events including their New Years party. ABOUT JDRF For over 40 years, JDRF has been a global leader in the search for an end to type 1 diabetes (T1D), through both research funding and advocacy. During that time, JDRF has always talked about a cure as a singular destination: a return to normal physiology.
